Get your fill of fantastic winter festivals in Vernon, BC and Whitehorse, YT. There’s nothing like the exhilaration of being out in the crisp fresh air. Come experience the majestic hot air balloons, the ice and snow sculptures, athletic competitions and plenty of great food, dancing and celebrating. It’s all happening at the Vernon Winter Carnival in early-February and the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous starting mid-February.
Getting there is easy. From Vancouver, BC, it’s a one hour flight to Kelowna. From there you can rent a car, or get transportation up to Vernon where the fun begins. Once you’ve had your fun in Vernon, hope on an Air North direct flight to Whitehorse for some seriously cool festivities.
Vernon Winter Carnival
The Vernon Winter Carnival is 10 days of fun-filled adventure, both indoors and out. Each year is a different theme, from Pirates to Mardi Gras and everything in between. There are prizes for best performances and costumes too.
Look up to the sky during the early days of the Vernon Winter Carnival. Dozens of colourful hot air balloons soar above you as they take part in North Okanagan Hot Air Balloon Festival. There’s the crowning of the Queen of Silver Star, broomball tournaments, a treasure hunt, pub night, and a dance party. You’ll marvel at the talent at the Snow Sculpture Competition. Get up to SilverStar Mountain Resort where you can ski, snowshoe and take part in an over-the-hill downhill competition and more!
Then it’s time to heat things up on the dance floor. Dance the night away at one of several carnival dances. There’s so much to experience from fantastic foodie fun to live music with battle of the bands, duelling pianos and a Blues festival! Add to that a Parka Party, a community skate, a hockey tournament, the polar bear swim and a guided snowshoe tour and you’ve got yourself one heck of a winter vacation!
The fun doesn’t end in Vernon, next stop, Whitehorse!
The Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous
Each year in the latter part of February, the Sourdough Rendezvous offers up tons of fun for locals and visitors alike.
Get creative with their International Hair Freezing Contest. Freeze your hair in a funky style and send in a photo for great cash prizes and a soak in the hot springs.
Things heat up at the Rendezvous Affair with a male dance group and at Sourdough Sam’s Lip Sync contest. Test your skills at contests like the whipsaw challenge, the log toss, the axe throw, the chainsaw chuck and more!
A trip to the Yukon would not be complete without sampling some of the great food here! Sink your teeth into maple taffy, sweet cones and maple butter. And don’t forget the Yukon burritos!
This is a family fun vacation with a cultural craft show, Kidsfest, a medieval martial arts combat show, and the Rendezvous Family Fun Fair. Take in the Annual Sourdough Rendezvous Hockey Tournament, complete with beer garden. The final weekend, start off your day with a good old fashioned pancake breakfast. Then, finish up your Yukon winter fun fest with an epic pyrotechnic show set to music.
Double your fun with two winter festivals to create warm and lasting memories for years to come.
