Some Things You Need To Know About Vernon Winter 2017 Carnival – “Carnival Celebrates Canada’s 150th”

We know you can’t believe it but, yes, January is upon us! Fall has officially passed and winter has set in! And yes, here in Vernon we’ve had quite a few heavy snowfalls and cold winter weather. So the ski slopes are open, and everybody is happily enjoying the blessing winter brings! But snow and cold weather aren’t the only things that happen during a Vernon BC winter, the annual Vernon Winter Carnival is an event that everybody looks forward to!

The Winter Carnival is a 10 day carnival, with a multitude of activities like a Snow Sculpture Competition, Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, Winter Carnival Parade, UnWined Downtown, Dinner Theatres, and free Family Day in the park, Outdoor Costume Skating Party, Classic Peewee Hockey Tournament and literally a 80 others. ! This year’s Carnival theme is “Carnival Celebrates Canada 150th”, and it all begins on February 3rd  and goes until February 12th, with a full day schedule of events for each day! You can choose to attend one event or all of them! Certain activities occur more than once like the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta and Dance Classes. Others take place over a period of a few days like the Snow Sculpture Competition. And then there are the one time events like Irish Pub Night or Family Day in Polson Park!

One of the most popular events is the Winter Carnival Parade! The 57rd annual Parade will be held February 4th at 12pm. This parade starts in downtown Vernon on 27th street. It’s a free parade that showcases some amazing floats supported and built by non-profit organizations, local businesses, sports teams, multicultural groups and dance/music teams. The themed parade last’s about a half-hour and makes its route through 27th street onto 30 Avenue! This year’s theme is  of courseCarnival Celebrates Canada’s 150th”, so get ready to help us celebrate in true red & white fashion! You can even get a chance to see the Tourism Vernon float. It is sure to be incredible! The Kalamalka Highlanders Bag Pipe and the Army Band will be marching in full garb, along with the Caring Clowns that walk alongside the parade floats, sharing their wonderful smiles. This is the largest free event of the Vernon Carnival, and is great for all ages!

Another popular event is the Hot Air Balloon Glow, which will be held on February 3rd.It lasts about an hour, and is perfect for the whole family! Your family can enjoy the wonder and mystery of the hot air balloons as they light up the winter sky! An event that will truly mesmerize you with just a glance is the annual Snow Sculpture Competition held at Silver Star! You can come by and watch their progress through Friday February 3rd to Sunday, February 5th, and even help determine which sculpture should receive the “People’s Choice Award”! It’s an event that everyone will love to watching and keep up with! Snow being turned into art….does it get any better than that?!?
