This summer was a fantastic season at the Silver Star Bike Park – with a multitude of races and events on the hill, an extra night of extended play hours weekly and new cross country trails. The bike park is a perfect learning ground for those new to the sport while providing thrills and exhilaration for seasoned riders. Alas Silver Star has closed the lifts and the park for the season, but those looking to get out biking around the Vernon area still have many trails to choose from.
Start off riding the scenic trails in Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park. The Lookout Trail provides panoramas of stunning Kalamalka Lake and a flowing cross country ride for all abilities. The North Okanagan Cycling Society has been working on this trail so be sure to give silent thanks for all their hard work as you wind and weave along. On the south side of the provincial park, you can access a mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced trails in the Cosen’s Creek mountain bike area. You can tell that there are some excellent rides here just by looking at the trail names: Fraidy Cat, Freaky Creeky, Crash of 08 and Interstellar (to name only a few). There are over 20 runs in this area providing technical trail features, rolling single track, log rides and flowing descents.
Ellison Provincial Park is another area that offers some moderate downhill biking trails. These mellow trails offer views of Okanagan Lake with gradual climbs in a forested setting. Ellison Provincial Park is a perfect place to ride and appreciate nature. Vernon is also home to a BMX park where riders can show off their tricks and skills and the Vernon BMX society hosts races for all to participate and take in. So get out there, tear it up, and enjoy the crisp fall weather on our many biking trails.
